Top 4 Signs Your Baby Is Ready For Weaning
If your baby is between four and six months, you may be thinking of weaning her onto solid food. If you're unsure whether your baby is ready, there are a few signs to look out for which will make it a little easier to decide.
You will know when your baby is ready for weaning when:
- She’ll be able to hold her head steady
- Sit up straight without flopping forward
- Co-ordinate eyes, hands and mouth (for self-feeding)
- Grabbing for spoon
These signs can appear anywhere between four and six months of age. So whilst official guidelines suggest weaning should begin no earlier than six months, you can start as early as 17 weeks (four months). Just consult with your GP or health visitor before you do.
Do not begin weaning earlier than 17 weeks as little digestive systems are not developed enough to cope with solid food.
Some great first foods to try are:
Broccoli, cauliflower, green beans, peas, avocado, carrots, parsnips, butternut squash, swede, courgettes, banana, sweet potatoes, mangoes, papaya, pears, peaches, plums, apples.
All of the above can either be pureed or served as very soft finger foods (if you little one is ready for finger foods)
